Development Communication Society, Nepal (SODEC-Nepal) was founded by a group of mass communication professionals with the goal to exercise the influence of communications media for better access to information, education, and knowledge and act as a stimulant for development. The premise for SODEC-Nepal’s involvement in development communication is based on the concept of multiplicity, democratization, and participation at all levels by stressing the cultural and political identities of the local communities.
With a strong assertion that “one is no longer attempting to create a need for the information one is disseminating, but one is rather disseminating information for which there is a need,” SODEC-Nepal produces and disseminates media that promotes good governance and accountability through the encouragement of citizen voices in media. In order to foster the process of empowering at the grassroots level, SODEC-Nepal collaborates and works closely with media organizations, civil society organizations (CSOs), universities, UN agencies, embassies, and the Government of Nepal.
Dedicated and experienced professionals of the organization have visited almost 65 districts of Nepal and nearly nine international countries for the preparation of reports and other materials required to prepare reports and profiles for various assignments. Our team has intensive field experience to internalize ground realities of the poorest of the poor, development effects, the negative impact of a lack of development, and so on.
SODEC-Nepal mainly produces and broadcasts media content for Radio and Television and is attempting to venture into cross-media platforms to engage diverse development partners.
SODEC-Nepal's methodology extends beyond simple content production, focusing on a holistic communication strategy that integrates media with community-led initiatives. By designing campaigns that are contextually relevant and culturally sensitive, the organization ensures its messages resonate deeply with local populations. This approach includes training local journalists and community leaders to produce their own content, thereby amplifying local voices and fostering a sense of ownership over the development process. Furthermore, SODEC-Nepal utilizes participatory communication tools, such as community radio broadcasts, town hall meetings, and interactive digital platforms, to facilitate two-way dialogue between citizens and policymakers. This emphasis on dialogue and feedback loops transforms citizens from passive information recipients into active participants in the governance and development of their communities.
The organization's work is driven by a deep commitment to social change, with a particular focus on marginalized communities. For example, SODEC-Nepal has developed specific projects addressing issues like gender inequality, climate change resilience, and public health awareness in remote and underserved areas. These projects are not one-off campaigns but are integrated into long-term development plans, ensuring sustainable impact. By partnering with a wide range of national and international stakeholders, SODEC-Nepal leverages diverse expertise and resources to create comprehensive and impactful solutions. This collaborative and multi-sectoral approach is key to tackling complex development challenges and ensuring that the benefits of communication and information reach those who need them most.
